BARCELONA SHORT-MOVIES CONTEST

 

 

INTRODUCTION

 

The United Nations has designated the first Monday of October every year as World Habitat Day. The purpose is to create awareness on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right to adequate shelter for all. It is also a reminder to the world of its collective responsibility for the future of the human habitat.

 

The World Habitat Day is dedicated this year to the potential and the problems of urban living in the 21st century. The lemma for this year is Better Cities, Better Life, this theme highlights our vision of a sustainable urban world that harnesses potentials and possibilities, mitigates inequalities and disparities, and provides a home for people of all cultures and ages, both rich and poor.

 

The UN-HABITAT Office in Barcelona is organising a series of events to celebrate this year World Habitat Day.

 

In this context, we would like to invite the public interested in urban issues to participate in a short-movies contest.

 

The objective is to show exciting and relevant ideas of how cities can improve the quality of life for its inhabitants and how each one of us can help to make our cities better places for all.

 

Please review the following information to guide you when making your submissions related to the Barcelona World Habitat Day short-movies contest.

Contest Guidelines:
 

1. - Content:

 

Join us in inspiring and show to the general public about the importance to create a sustainable urban development and to show how these spaces can improve the quality of life of the citizens.

 

You can use the theme from this year "Better Cities, Better Life" as inspiration idea by creating a short video up to 10 minutes in length to be presented in the World Urban Day event to be held in Barcelona.

 

What you put in your video to show how the quality of life of peoples could improve in an urban area is up to you (live action, animation, etc).

 

We're looking for bold, creative, and exciting videos to help educate the public about the importance of creating sustainable and inclusive urban spaces.

 

The short-movies should be informative, memorable, and creative and include a call to action that encourages viewers to get involved and "get things done." Try to create a short-movie that tells a compelling, impact story about the importance of creating a sustainable urban development and to show how these spaces can improve the quality of life. 

 

2. - Prizes:

 

There will be first, second and third place awards given for the best videos showing how we can improve the quality of life of the people in an urban space and the importance of creating sustainable urbanization for all.

 

The winner will be invited to attend Barcelona for the week of WHD, including travel, accommodation and allowances. The other two places will receive a special mention and their films will be shown and discussed with the public in Barcelona.

 

3. - Evaluation Criteria:

 

Videos will be judged by the following six criteria:

 

a. Overall Impact (educational, inspiring, persuasive)

b. Creativity

c. Capacity to show the importance of cities in targeting poverty and improving living conditions.

d. Getting through the message of "Better Cities, Better Life".

e. Alignment with the Millennium Development Goals.

 

4. - Judging Process:

 

A panel of judges composed by universities, public sector, civil society, and cinema will select the winners using the above evaluation criteria.

 

The Barcelona World Habitat Day short-movies contest reserves the right to disqualify and remove any entry which is deemed, in the judging panel's discretion, inappropriate, offensive, defamatory, or demeaning to the Unite Nations and UN-HABITAT or any other party's reputation or goodwill.

 

Winners will be notified by e-mail, express mail and/or phone and shall be required to complete an affidavit or declaration of eligibility/liability release and, except where prohibited, a publicity release and such other documents as may be required by the UN-HABITAT Best Practice Office Barcelona to protect its right to air and use the winning entry.

 

Required documents must be signed and received within 5 days of the date printed on the prize notification. Failure to comply or return of any prize notification as undeliverable may result in forfeiture of prize and selection of the next highest score entrant as the winner. UN-HABITAT Best Practice Office Barcelona is not responsible for and shall not be liable for late, lost, misdirected, or unsuccessful efforts to notify winners.

 

Accepting the prize constitutes the UN-HABITAT Best Practice Office Barcelona permission to use winner's name, hometown (including state) and/or likeness for promotional purposes, without compensation.

 

Judges' decisions are final. 

 

5. - Who can participate?

 

This contest is open to the general public including any current cinema students. Entrants may work individually or as a team, the video does not have to be new, only relevant to this year’s lemma.

  

6. - Format and Length:

 

Short-movies must be 10 minutes in duration.

 

Entries may be in any form of moving image, including but not limited to, video, animation. The videos can be presented in any language but all entry videos have to submit along with English subtitles if not already spoken in English.

 

7. - Submissions and Deadlines:

 

You are free to begin creating your video right away.

 

Submissions will be accepted from July 31 through September 15^th 2010.

Submissions will be accepted through either electronic upload onto your own YouTube site we can then link it to our webpage, or by email to our email address. We will then review the content and upload it to our site.

Option 2 Send the film to our email address at whdfilmcompetition@gmail.com Please use a compressed file format, if you need help in sending large files please contact us for assistance. We will then upload the file to our YouTube page.

Once we have uploaded your video to our YouTube page your video will have been entered into the competition. 

 

8. – Copy Right:

 

-       Use of images, music, and other works in the public domain may be incorporated into short-movies. However, materials that infringe on the rights of any third party may not be used unless consent has been obtained.

-       The Short-movie must not contain material that is inappropriate, indecent, obscene, hateful, defamatory, slanderous or libellous;

-       The Short-movie must not contain material that promotes bigotry, racism, hatred or harm against any group or individual or promotes discrimination based on age, disability, gender, nationality, race, religion, or sexual orientation; and

-       The Short-movie must not contain material that is unlawful, in violation of or contrary to the laws or regulations in any state where Video is created.

 

The UN-HABITAT Best Practice Office Barcelona is not responsible for late, lost, delayed, damaged, misdirected, incomplete, illegible or unintelligible entries.

 

By submitting a short-movie to this contest, each participant automatically confers on the UN-HABITAT Best Practice Office Barcelona an irrevocable, nonexclusive and unrestricted license to use the video for purposes consistent with the UN-HABITAT Best Practice Office Barcelona mission. This includes the right to copy, reproduce, display, or distribute the video, and to make derivative works based upon the video or a substantial portion of it without attribution or prior permission. Other than the authority to the UN-HABITAT Best Practice Office Barcelona as set out in this paragraph, participants retain ownership rights of their videos.
